Tarantula & Invertebrate Adoption

I have kept tarantulas and other invertebrates (scorpions, millipedes, beetle, etc.) for over 50 years. During this time, I have seen different situations come up that may prevent a keeper from maintaining their collections. This can include things like landlords that don’t want them in their house/apartment, a family emergency, or just a loss of interest. If you live in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, and are willing to part with your animals for free, I will take them off your hands. Whether you have just one or dozens, I will take them and guarantee them a good home! Please note: I do not adopt any of these animals out. Feel free to contact me at davethebugguy67@gmail.com.

      Hi Cody. I actually do not adopt out tarantulas. This blog was more about me adopting them for myself. Brachypelma klassi has become more available in the past year or so and they show up on many dealers’ lists throughout the United States. If you did a Google search for “Brachypelma klassi for sale” it should take you right to them! Good luck!

    I love all my T’s and I’d never let any of them go, but every once in a while I see posts about people who cannot keep theirs anymore and I’m not close enough. From now on, I’ll know where to refer them to!

      I do not have any that need homes. All tarantulas are venomous but their venom is very mild. It is designed to kill insects and not people.

      Despite this being an old post and your question probably having been answered; yes, tarantulas native to the US are venomous, as are all other species in the world without exception. The degree of venom is what varies. Anything from US, Mexico, and further south (western hempishere) possess only mild venom where you could carry on with your day after a bite. The same is not true for those tarantulas native to the other side of the Atlantic. A bite from a species over yonder would likely be a horrific ordeal as their venom is considered “medically significant”

    I have been looking for a Euathlus Parvulus( the Chilean Gold Burst Tarantula)for about 6 months now. I live in the United States, Indiana specifically, and have come to realize how rare they really are in the states here. Is there any way you can help? I have been looking for this one specifically to start my T. collection and won’t settle with another till I find one.

      Hey Robert. Try using Arachnoboards. Either place a want ad or try contacting a seller by the name of Joe Rossi on there (he always has ads in the classifieds section and seems to often carry the harder to find species. Good luck!

    I’ve never had a spider and I’m kind of scared of them. But I would like to. I would likeHave one to get rid of my fears. What is a good species for someone like me? And how do I get it?

      Hi. Thanks for writing. Since you have a fear, which is a natural reaction by a lot of people, I would recommend seeking out someone in your area who already has one. That way they can help you hands on. They can show you the proper technique for holding one and show you how calm they can be. They can also provide support should something go wrong (if a tarantula falls to the floor it will definitely get hurt and sometimes if they get nervous, they can move fast). If, after holding it, you feel you want to pursue getting one, I would recommend either Grammostola rosea (porteri), the rose hair or Grammostola pulchripes, the Chaco golden knee. Most pet stores carry rose hairs and sometimes the employees will be very helpful by allowing handling. Please remember though that even though they are just a spider, they are like all animals and need regular care and have certain requirements if they are to survive. They can also live a very long time (15-25 years with some females!). If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask! Good luck!

    Hello,
    I am looking for a homoeomma sp red female. I didn’t realize they would be this difficult to track down. I would prefer an adult female, but would be open to a juvi, or even a sling that I understand are more difficult to care for.

      It’s been awhile since I’ve seen adult females available. Jamie’s Tarantula’s often has babies available but she is currently out of stock. I would recommend going to Arachnoboards and checking the classifieds (or placing one yourself). Good luck! They are worth the hunt!

      Hi Chris! Would you ever consider mailing it? I could help you with packing and would pay for the shipping. Otherwise I would talk to any local petstores (not a PetCo or Pet Smart), perhaps a mom and pop store or one specializing in reptiles. They will almost certainly take them. I have also found some on my local Craigslist.

    I have fallen completely in love with a beautiful female orb spider, I know she is dying. I have cried and feed her often with grasshoppers earthworms and June bug larvae

    I know now I want a spider who is long lived and I will not cry again at the first frost

    Is anyone able to guide me in this area???

    I will purchase a large terrarium for my new tarantula

    Yes I have other pets to protect her from.

    I have 1 Rottweiler, 2 short haired cats 🙏🙏🙏🙏

      Hi Brenda. Most pet stores will carry at least one species of tarantula for purchase. If you go to a specialized store, such as one specific to reptiles, they usually carry a wide variety to choose from (and they can help you, based on their selection, pick out the species best for you). Believe it or not, a large terrarium is not necessary (and again, if you go to a reptile store, they can set you up the right way). Good luck!

    hi I am a small mammal herp and invert rescuer based in Michigan I am 14 so I am only just getting started I have a curly hair and would like work with some other new worlds like some aphonopelma gramastola nhandu brachypelma or aviculara before I start taking them in if you could help I would be thankful if you would direct me to someone who could I would be just as thankful thank you for your time

      Hi. Thanks for writing! I love what you’re doing, especially at such a young age! Your love of animals is so nice to see! What kind of help are you looking for? I will do anything I can to assist. You have definitely chosen some of my favorite tarantulas genuses, all of which are so easy to keep and tend to be docile (Aphonopelma, Grammostola and Brachypelma). So what can I do for you?

        Thank you for the quick reply and help. So, right now I just need some tips on breeding crickets because the bill is racking up and it will save me a lot of money. I was planning on getting a tote or rubbermade trashcan.Which do you think would work best? I already have some connections because my Mom used to work at the Detroit zoo. I am trying to find some more if you know anybody.
        Changing the topic I do have quite a bit of expirience with inverts such as snails, sea monkeys, superworms, dubias,Madagascan hissing roaches, curly hair tarantula, blue feigning death beetles, bess beetles, cross orb weaver, jeweled flower mantis, ghost mantis, and getting some isopods very soon. Is there anything else you think I should work with before I take it in? My parents said no centipedes because they are jerks and no scorpions because they are too aggressive and we have cats.

    Dave,
    I just wanted to say I think it is wonderful that you are rescuing tarantulas! There are so many people who think they are a novelty and then just discard them like a used napkin. I have 7 tarantulas, 4 of which were rescues, three scorpions, one was a rescue, and I love it. They are beautiful creatures. There needs to be more people like you!
